Simulation tools

All numerical simulation tools (Mie, BEM, RCWA, BPM, plasmonic nanoparticles, cylinder dispersion, photothermal, and all calculators) run entirely in your browser. No input data, parameters or results are sent to any server. Your data never leaves your device.

Tools that use Pyodide (BEM Solver, RCWA) download Python packages on first use (~35 MB). These packages are fetched from public CDNs and cached locally by your browser. No user data is included in these requests.

Methods Assistant

The Methods Assistant has two modes:

  • Semantic search (default): runs locally in your browser using an embedded language model. No data leaves your device.
  • AI synthesis (optional): requires an Anthropic API key provided by you. When enabled, your query and the retrieved context are sent directly to api.anthropic.com. NanophotonicsLab does not operate any backend or proxy — the request goes straight from your browser to Anthropic's API.

API key handling

  • The key is stored in your browser's localStorage only if you choose to save it.
  • It is never sent anywhere other than api.anthropic.com.
  • You can delete it at any time using the "Clear key" button in the Assistant, or by clearing your browser's site data.
  • Recommendation: use a restricted or non-production API key. Do not use keys with billing access beyond what you're comfortable with.

Analytics

NanophotonicsLab uses Umami for anonymous, aggregated usage analytics. Umami is privacy-friendly:

  • No cookies
  • No personal data collected
  • No cross-site tracking
  • GDPR compliant

Analytics data includes page views, referrer, browser type and country (derived from IP, which is not stored). No individual user profiles are created.

Cookies and local storage

NanophotonicsLab does not use cookies. The following data may be stored in your browser's localStorage:

  • Theme preference (light/dark) — stored as theme
  • Anthropic API key (Methods Assistant only, if you choose to save it) — stored as anthropic-api-key

You can clear all stored data at any time through your browser settings or by using the controls provided in the relevant tool.

Third-party services

  • Google Fonts — the Inter typeface is loaded from fonts.googleapis.com. See Google's privacy policy.
  • Anthropic API — only when you explicitly use AI synthesis in the Methods Assistant. See Anthropic's privacy policy.
  • Pyodide CDN — Python WebAssembly packages loaded on demand for BEM and RCWA tools.
  • Umami Cloud — anonymous analytics. See Umami's privacy policy.
